8 Cleaning Mistakes To Avoid

1. Cleaning mistakes: Overloading the Dishwasher

Overloading a dishwasher is a cleaning mistake

First, let’s talk dishwashing. Do you overload your dishwasher, or put the utensils in going the same direction? If so, you’re impeding your dishwasher’s ability to do its job.

Don’t crowd it, and make sure to put the utensils {in particular, the knives and spoons} with some pointing up and some pointing down.

2. Spraying Furniture Polish On The Surface- An Easy Mistake

Do you spray furniture polish and other cleaning agents directly onto the surface you’re cleaning? If so, stop.

In particular, furniture polish sprayed directly onto the surface just causes build-up that actually dulls the surface and is tough to remove. Get in the habit of spraying polish and other cleaners onto a cloth and then applying it to the surface.

3. Using A Feather Duster

Cleaning with a feather duster

Don’t use a feather duster. Ever. The reason for this is because it doesn’t actually grab onto dust, it just spreads it even further. Instead, use a microfiber cloth such as these found at Amazon.

They grab onto dust particles and keep them from moving somewhere else.

4. Using Too Much Fabric Softener

If you want softer towels, just use more fabric softener, right? Wrong! Too much fabric softener can actually bind up the towel fibers and make them stiffer and less absorbent.

So stick with the manufacturer’s recommendation and use a measuring cup to be sure you’re not estimating incorrectly.

5. Cleaning Mistakes-Not Sanitizing Sponges

Sponges should be sanitized every few days, or you are just spreading yucky bacteria everywhere you use them. To sanitize a sponge quickly and easily, get it soaking wet and place it in a bowl. Now microwave it for 1-2 minutes on high. Done!

Did you know you should replace your sponge at least once every two weeks? Purchase more sponges here!

6. Cleaning Glass (Windows) In A Circular Motion

Window Cleaning Solution.

We’ve all done it, right? But, if you want your windows to sparkle and show off a streak-free look, the best way is to clean your window in a two-step manner. First, clean in a horizontal direction. 2nd, wipe the glass clean with a vertical motion to finish things off.

7. Using Soap And Water To Clean Cast Iron

Dirty Cast Iron Pan

You can’t beat a cast iron pan when it comes to cooking, but they do require a little different attention than other pans when it comes to cleaning.

While soap and water is used on my kitchen items, cast iron is not one of them.

Soapy water removes the seasoned layer from the surface of your cast iron pan. Learn more about how to clean cast iron in this 101 Days Of Organization post.

8. Cleaning From The Bottom Up

Swifter washing floors. A cleaning mistake is starting from the bottom.

I get it! You always see your floors so naturally you want to clean them first, but DON”T! This only causes more work for you later.

There is a rule to efficient cleaning. Clean from the top first and work your way down. As dirt or dust falls, you will clean it in the next step.

When the floors are cleaned last, every bit of dirt or dust will be cleaned up as you finish cleaning the room.
