Lunchboxes can get pretty stinky inside, thanks mainly to our kids who forget to throw away their food scraps and wrappers each day. After a lunchbox sits for a weekend like that? Ugh! After sitting in a hot car? Triple ugh!

Today we’ve got the solution to stinky lunchbox odors. Here are some simple ways to get rid of them!

From Good Housekeeping

For a hard metal or plastic lunchbox, Heloise suggests dampening a paper towel with white vinegar. Put the vinegar-dampened paper towel inside the offending lunchbox and close the lid. Let the lunchbox sit like that overnight. The next morning, remove the paper towel. Now use warm water and dish soap to wash out the inside of the lunchbox. Dry thoroughly, and you’re ready to pack another lunch.

If you have a soft-sided, insulated lunchbox, you can use the same method above. But when it’s time to wash it, this type of lunchbox can be thrown into the washing machine {and on a weekly basis!}. Use the gentle cycle, and do not put it in the dryer. It is best to allow time for the lunchbox to air dry.

For quick cleanups on a daily basis, the most convenient way to keep up on lunchbox odors is to use sanitizing wipes. Wipe out the lunchbox when your child returns from school, and let it air dry before re-packing for the next day’s lunch.

If you prefer an all-natural solution for daily cleanings, use a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Just spray on, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it out with paper towels. Once the lunchbox dries, the vinegar smell will disappear.
