There is an easy way to clean and sanitize your garbage disposal! Doing it regularly will give you a disposal that smells fresh and works even better. Here’s a hint: it involves some pretty simple ingredients that you probably already have at home. If not, you can get them easily and inexpensively!

There really isn’t a scent much worse than walking up to your kitchen sink and catching a whiff of a smelly disposal, right? Take care of that and sharpen the blades all at once. First, get an empty ice cube tray, white distilled vinegar, and a few lemons. Chop a lemon or two per ice cube tray, and place the pieces of lemon inside each cube. You can pack them in tightly, or just have a piece or two per cube, like this.

Once you have filled the cubes with pieces of fresh lemon, fill the tray the rest of the way with white vinegar. Do not add water to the vinegar, just go ahead and use it at full potency!

Once the tray is filled with vinegar and lemons, simply place it in the freezer until it is frozen solid. This should take a few hours. Once frozen, you will have lemon vinegar ice cubes. Ice cubes sharpen your disposal’s blades, vinegar provides a little disinfecting power, and the lemons provide a nice, fresh scent. Now all you need to do is start the disposal {with the cold water running, as usual} and toss in half a dozen of those lemon vinegar ice cubes. Save the rest for the next time your garbage disposal needs a little pick-me-up!
