Summer is the time for yard work, but a cluttered garage, and shed only makes the work more frustrating and a lot less fun! Are you dreaming of a no-clutter summer, one in which you can find and access your lawn and garden tools whenever you want them? Well, look no further. I have some excellent organization tips for you to help you achieve that not-so-impossible dream.
Experts in home organization like to stress the importance of having your tools up off the floor. Why? They are much easier to see and access that way. Use your walls to hang those tools in an organized line that lets you see exactly what tool you need and grab it in an instant. You can easily DIY a set up like this on the walls of your garage or shed in an afternoon. Some nails and 1-inch boards in 6 or 8-foot lengths are all you need.
For a little more versatility that accommodates all sorts of tools in differing sizes, try mounting slat board on the wall of your garage or garden shed. As you can see, an entire wall could hold all the tools you could ever want. Plus the hooks and shelves do it both easily and handsomely!
Pegboard is another option for wall storage. It’s fairly inexpensive and holds lots of hooks and brackets that can be adjusted as you need. It’s an easy DIY project to install some pegboard, and if you like you can even paint it to improve its look. Here’s a genius tip for pegboard: to easily recall where any tool was hung, trace its outline on the pegboard. You’ll spot where it goes in an instant!
Shelving Units
Installing shelves in the garage or shed is another great way to store stuff at eye level, away from little hands, and up off the floor. With some adjustable shelving for a pegboard, you can adjust the height of the shelves, and the space between shelves to accommodate tools and other items as needed. I love how organized this is!
Every garage or shed benefits from a dedicated workstation, which is an organization workhorse. Include a tool cabinet, potting table, wall hooks and overhead cabinets to get the most out of your garage workstation.
Here’s another genius tip for that pegboard wall. Instead of painting it one color, paint it different colors to highlight areas for different uses. For an example, paint a red square for that red garden hose, and green squares for gardening gloves and supplies.
Add bins to a slatted wall to hold all those little items that otherwise you’d find yourself forever searching for. Seed packets, duct tape, small rolls of wire and other items are perfect for bin storage. Take this set up a step further and label the bins for easier reference.
Use metal trash cans to hold and organize messy things such as ice melt, bird seed and water softener pellets.
