It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming chore to declutter and organize the kitchen. For today’s post I have some decluttering ideas to help you better organize your kitchen. With these ideas, you can certainly choose your own pace. Work through them in only a few minutes at a time if needed, and before you know it your kitchen will be decluttered and organized, a truly welcoming spot befitting the heart of the home.

One of the easiest ways to accomplish some effective organization {in any room!} is to set a timer. Choose the amount of time you’ve got to work with at that particular point, and work effectively for the entire allotment. What sort of decluttering tasks can you accomplish in a limited amount of time?

Grab a trash bag, and work quickly through the drawers and cabinets to toss out anything that is broken, empty, or has just seen better days. This way, you help establish a clean slate for yourself to organize the things that are worth keeping around.

Use another bag or box to collect the things that you don’t use, but may still usable to someone else. Donate those to charity or take them to your local thrift shop.

Pay close attention to the areas that are prone to clutter. For most people, this is countertops and junk drawers.

You can accomplish a quick discard of things that are just causing clutter in about 30 minutes, believe it or not! Once you have decluttered and cleared away all the unnecessary stuff, it’s time for better organization of the space. Here are some of the best tips to keep in mind:

Focus on looking at what you have decided to keep, and make the most-used items in your kitchen the most easily accessible. That means storing them within easy reach. Items that are used less often should be the things you store up high.

If you have kids, consider having a kids’ drawer or cupboard, or some type of space where you can store the things they are always getting for themselves in easy reach. This is ultimately a time saver for you!

Use zoning to organize your kitchen. A zone is a spot for all the items that help you accomplish a certain task. For instance, a baking zone for all your baking needs, a cooking zone for spices, oils and pans that are used to prepare meals, and another zone for most-used appliances.

Get organizers for drawers and cabinets to help you maximize the space you have to work with. You’ll find some great organizers at Amazon!

Don’t get rid of the junk drawer! Yes, I’m serious! A “junk drawer” is really the space every kitchen needs to house all those little miscellaneous items that don’t go anywhere else. The trick is to make sure that the items you allow in there are actually used–and not real junk. Here’s an example of a useful junk drawer:
