I love a good home hack! So you should stay tuned for my very favorite home hack! Have you ever been in a potentially stinky situation–one where you need a toilet plunger NOW–but there isn’t one handy? Before the next time occurs, read today’s post. I’ll show you how to unclog a toilet without a plunger. You never know when you may need this helpful home hack, so it pays to be prepared ahead of time!

The first thing to know is that if you flush and the water rises high in the bowl–don’t repeatedly flush hoping that the clog will clear. You may end up with water and yuck all over your bathroom floor. Instead, use my home hack and do one of the following things:

  • Grab a bucket and fill it with 2-3 quarts of hot tap water from the tub. Pour the hot water into the toilet bowl. The hot water may be enough to break up the brown clog you’re trying to resolve.
  • Use some shampoo. Pour shampoo into the bowl and let it sit for half an hour. The shampoo helps break up the solids causing the clog. For an extreme clog, you might need to let it sit overnight if possible.
  • Go to your closet and get a wire hanger, one that is coated with plastic so it doesn’t scratch the toilet bowl. Unwind it and straighten it out as much as you can, then use it like you would a toilet snake to break up the solids in the neck below the toilet bowl.
  • If nothing else works, you can try some bleach. Pour about two cups of bleach into the toilet bowl. The chemicals in the bleach will break down the clog. Just wait about half an hour for the magic home hack to happen.
