Window Cleaning Tips: Paper Towels

A lot of us use paper towels for cleaning windows without really thinking about it. But are they the best thing for the job? The answer depends on whether you’re using soft, cloth-like paper towels or cheaper, stiffer paper towels like you might find at your local Dollar Tree.

Surprisingly, the cloth-like texture of some paper towel brands are not the best for cleaning windows. The softer the fibers, the more they tend to leave lint and streaks behind. In contrast, a cheap and stiff paper towel is usually the better choice for windows because the fibers don’t break down as quickly. However, they still tend to leave your windows streaky if you aren’t careful.

Window Cleaning Tips: Newspaper

Did your grandma use newspaper to clean her windows? Turns out she was pretty smart. Newspaper has a stiff texture that doesn’t leave lint on your windows, so that is a big reason for their effectiveness. But does newspaper leave streaks? The answer to that question depends on the type of ink.

The next time you grab a copy of your local newspaper, look for the official Soy Ink seal. If your paper is printed with soy ink, it is your best choice for cleaning windows. Some newspapers use petroleum-based ink, and that type of ink tends to run, smear and make a mess of your windows.

The Bottom Line

If you have access to newspaper printed with soy ink, this is the best medium for window cleaning. If not, use stiffer, less expensive paper towels that won’t leave lint behind.

Window cleaning tips are not complete without a good homemade window cleaning solution. Use this with soy ink newspaper and have the cleanest windows yet!
