How to Keep Your Vacuum Smelling Clean & Fresh

November 16, 2017 by 101 Days... Leave a Comment

You rely on your vacuum cleaner to help you keep your home clean. So what happens if your vacuum is actually contributing to nasty odors inside your home? It can happen, but you can prevent it by keeping your vacuum smelling clean and fresh. Here’s how!

  • The first thing to do {because it probably doesn’t get done often enough} is to clean the vacuum. The outside of it gets amazingly dusty and dirty, so wipe it down with a clean cloth or sanitizing wipe. If you use bags, change out the bag. If your vacuum has a canister to collect dirt and debris, empty it and then wash it out with soap and water. Be sure to thoroughly dry it before you put it back. Change out any dirty filters, and wash those that are washable. Again, thoroughly dry them before putting them back in the machine.
  • Now that you’ve got a clean vacuum, it’s time to prevent odors from coming back. One of the best ways to do this is to fight odors that start inside the vacuum bag. Sprinkle baking soda inside a new bag before inserting it inside the vacuum. You can also add some cinnamon if you like that scent. Baking soda will neutralize any odors that make their way inside, and the cinnamon will emit a pleasant scent every time you run the vacuum.
  • If your vacuum is bagless like mine, try essential oils. Sprinkle a few drops of lavender, lemon or other scent you like onto a paper towel. Tear the towel into small pieces, and then vacuum up the pieces. They’ll make their way through the vacuum and leave behind a nice scent.
  • You can also purchase scented vacuum crystals at your favorite retailer. These go inside the vacuum bag and emit a pleasant scent every time you vacuum.
