When sickness strikes your home, are you prepared to fight back?
Cleaning becomes extra important to try and keep everyone else from getting sick, too. Here is a list of 10 things you should clean when someone is sick.
Wash towels, especially all hand towels, and change them out daily until everyone is well. You would be surprised at how many germs accumulate on your hand towels!
After sickness strikes, it’s a really good idea to wash the sick person’s bedding in the hottest water safe for the fabrics. White bedding can even take a little bleach for extra germ-killing power. Colored sheets can’t take bleach, but they can take hydrogen peroxide, and it kills any germs just as well.
This is probably a no-brainer, but one of the first things to clean when someone is sick is the bathroom, and it’s best to clean as soon as possible. At the very least, use sanitizing wipes to clean sinks, faucet handles, and toilet seats. Keep them wiped down as often as necessary until the sickness passes.
Common areas of the home should be cleaned often during sickness. This definitely includes the kitchen. Be sure to sanitize things that are touched often such as: countertops, cabinet knobs, handles, sink faucets, and the refrigerator door handle.
To avoid re-infecting anyone who gets sick, replace their toothbrush with a fresh one as soon as the sickness is over. During sickness, you can help cut the spread of illness by soaking all toothbrushes in hydrogen peroxide for five minutes, then rinsing well. Do this each day until everyone is well.
It’s a good idea to go around the house and wipe down door handles and light switches with sanitizing wipes. Do this at least once or twice a day, or as often as needed while sickness continues.
When kids are sick, remember to clean up the areas where they play.
One of the most commonly touched areas in the house are any electronics. Sanitize remotes, cellphones, and keyboards.
Toys and stuffed animals should be cleaned after sickness. Stuffed animals can be thrown into the washer. Hard surface toys can be sprayed with disinfectant spray. Wet the surface and let air dry for the most effective clean.
