You may know Borax as a wonderful laundry booster you can find on your grocer’s laundry soap aisle. But Borax is also a naturally-occurring mineral that is safe to use in many ways. It actually has a lot of other amazing uses throughout the home and garden. Here are 13 miracles {not exaggerating!} caused by using Borax in your home.
1. Borax can be used as a weed killer. Combine 10 ounces of Borax with 2.5 gallons of water. Mix thoroughly, and then use a sprayer to spray the leaves of unwanted weeds around the yard.
2. Combine equal parts Borax and honey for an effective ant killer.
3. Boron deficiency in garden plants is actually a widespread problem, causing stunted growth and low productivity. The good news is, you can fix this by using Borax as a fertilizer. Agricultural-grade Borax is used at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 100 square feet. The easiest way to apply this is to mix 1 tablespoon of Borax with 1 gallon of water, and give your affected plants 1 ounce each.
4. Freshen up your garbage disposal with Borax. Just sprinkle 3 tablespoons into the disposal and then let it sit for about an hour. Rinse it away with warm water.
5. For a good disinfecting of your floors, particularly the tile or linoleum in the bath and kitchen, use Borax. Just 1/4 cup in a gallon of hot water will do it.
6. Borax, washing soda and Epsom salts are the main ingredients in homemade dishwasher tabs. Add a little citric acid, baking soda and vinegar for an effective but inexpensive alternative to costly store brands.
7. Laundry stains, like tea or coffee, are no match for a 30 minute soak in warm water and Borax.
8. Borax will also help remove stubborn carpet stains. See how here.
9. Humidifiers are famous for getting that mildew smell we all hate. Just use Borax to get rid of the stink! Dissolve 1/2 cup of Borax in 1/2 cup of water, and add it to the humidifier tank. Let it run for 15 minutes, then rinse. No more smell!
10. Fridge odors are also no match for Borax. Dissolve a tablespoon in a quart of water and use it wipe down the inside of the fridge.
11. Combine Borax and lemon juice into a paste that is an effective rust remover for tools.
12. Got a dirty, sweat-stained ball cap in serious need of reviving? Borax to the rescue! Put that cap on the top rack of the dishwasher, add Borax, and then run a normal cycle {no drying}. When the cycle is done, take out the cap and put it over a tall glass or a bowl to help it keep its shape while it dries.
13. Cleaning the toilet bowl is as easy as a sprinkle of Borax, a scrub of the brush, and you’re done. No more hard water stains!
