Garden pest control can seem intimidating to many gardeners…but it doesn’t have to be! Controlling pests at home doesn’t have to involve chemicals pose a health risk for you, your loved ones, or your pets. Instead of using harmful chemicals to control pests, try using 100% natural essential oils, or other common household pantry items.
Common household items that are good at repelling bugs include coffee grounds, apple cider vinegar, beer, boric acid and borax. Use coffee grounds to repel ants. Apple cider vinegar will attract and kill those nasty fruit flies. Beer repels cockroaches, and boric acid gets rid of silverfish.
You can see in the following chart, shared by Part Select, how easy it is to use essential oils to keep house and home pest-free. Choose the pest you want to control, and then combine 2 1/2 teaspoons of the right essential oil with one cup of a grain alcohol {such as vodka} in a spray bottle. Then mist the areas where that pest is a problem. Citronella oil is excellent at repelling mosquitoes, peppermint is good for spiders, and try combining lavender and lemongrass for a double whammy against mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks, fleas and flies.
