Ever been in a downward dog and had your peaceful feeling interrupted by a nasty smell? That would be the scent of a yoga mat that desperately needs a cleaning. Without regular cleanings, dirt and yuck from sweat and body oils build up on your yoga mat. That build-up of debris leads to a nasty smelling mat–not what you want to smell in yoga class! Here is a fast and easy way to clean your yoga mat so you can enjoy each and every session.
The natural approach to a fast and easy cleaning is to mix a solution of half water and half white vinegar in a spray bottle. Now grab your favorite essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, lemon or orange. Add 3 drops of each oil to the water and vinegar mixture. If you need some essential oils, here is a good option. Use a mixture you like, because it will temporarily leave a little scent on your mat.
Spray your homemade yoga mat cleaning solution all over the surface of your mat. For a mat that’s really gross, let the solution sit and soak for a few minutes. Use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe down the mat thoroughly. Repeat this process for the other side of your yoga mat.
Now it is time to allow your yoga mat to air dry. {Don’t toss it in a dryer because the heat could ruin it}. Depending on how wet the mat got during cleaning, it could take up to a few hours to be completely dry. If you have a class during that time, be prepared to use a backup mat. Tomorrow, enjoy your freshly clean mat!
