One of those big annoyances about doing the laundry is when you forget that load of towels in the washer. If even a day has gone by, you’re left with nasty smelling towels! How can you remove the mildew smell that remains? I’ve got all the details! The good news is, it’s pretty easy to do. You won’t need anything fancy to get rid of that mildew smell for good.
The first thing to do is NOT put those smelly towels in the dryer. Your fabric softener isn’t enough to get rid of the mildew smell, and will only make it tougher to remove. What you need to do is run those towels through another wash, but this time don’t use your regular detergent. Instead, go to your pantry and grab the baking soda and vinegar. If you need a quick & cheap supply of either one, visit your local Dollar Tree! For future use, you can stock up with a bulk supply from Amazon.
Follow these steps to get great smelling towels again!
1.Fill the washer with hot water.
2.Once the washer fills and begins to agitate the towels, pour one cup of white vinegar into the washer. Allow the cycle to run as usual.
3.When the cycle is complete, refill the washer with hot water.
4.Once the washer fills and begins agitating, this time add half a cup of baking soda to the water. Allow the normal cycle to run once again.
5.After the second cycle, you are ready to dry the towels. If the weather is warm and dry, hang the towels outside in the sun. If not, dry them in the dryer as you usually would.
6.Once you have completed these steps, you should be left with sweet-smelling towels!
