Have you ever had a dreaded nail polish spill–on carpet? It’s dreaded for a reason, especially if it has sat for while and has dried! Today’s post is meant to help you try to remove nail polish from carpet, without damaging your carpet in the process. There are different processes, depending on whether the nail polish is fresh or dried. Good luck removing those carpet stains.
According to Coit, the professional carpet cleaning company, you should always do a spot test in an inconspicuous area of your carpet before trying any stain removal process.
- Once you find an old nail polish stain on your carpet, wet the stain with cold water. Spray 10-15 pumps of a liquid hairspray over the nail polish, then apply a little bit of rubbing alcohol over the hairspray. Use a small scrub brush to scrub the nail polish stain. Keep scrubbing for about one full minute. As you scrub the stain, keep adding cold water to the stain to increase visibility as the polish is loosened from the fibers. Repeat this process until you can no longer see the stain.
- For a fresh stain, immediately grab a clean, dry towel and blot up as much of the nail polish as you can. Continually adjust the area of the towel you’re blotting with to a clean spot. This will help ensure that you don’t spread the polish further. Once you have removed as much of the polish as you can, it’s time for non-acetone polish remover. Apply it to the remaining polish on the carpet, and use a fresh towel to blot it up. The non-acetone polish remover should lift the remaining stain out of the carpet. Be sure to rinse the area with fresh water once you’re finished using the polish remover.
- If you still have stains left, you can try window cleaner or hairspray.
If all of the above methods don’t remove the nail polish from your carpet, consider calling Coit for professional help.
