Do you ever feel like you’re living in a box? The organization level of small spaces can feel like living in organized chaos, but it doesn’t have to. There are some tips and tricks to help you live more comfortably and organized, even if you do live in a “box!” Keep reading for our best ways to tackle organized chaos.
De-clutter like crazy!
In order to stay on top of the chaos, you have to be very mindful about what comes into your living space. Things don’t set the rules about that, you do. Set a goal to de-clutter weekly, monthly, or quarterly, or however often you need to stay on top of things and to make your chaos organized chaos. People who live in small spaces have to decide what things are truly important to them, and get rid of the rest. Also, stick to the general rule of one thing in, one thing out. Following that rule ensures that you won’t be accumulating extra items that you already have one of.
Divide your space.
Visualize your living space, and mentally divide it into zones. This is especially helpful if you live in a place where one room has to serve more than one purpose. So your goal is to create zones within a room. This separates the space by function and makes it much easier to organize and control clutter. For example, if you have an exercise zone in your bedroom, then your goal is to keep stray clothing and other items out of the exercise zone. The exercise zone is only for exercise equipment! The same goes for a dining zone within your kitchen, or a study zone within the living room.
Maximize space wherever you can.
A good example of this is closet space. If the bottom two-thirds of your closet is wasted space, try placing your dresser inside the closet to conserve floor space in your bedroom. If you have a coat closet with unused space, try storing extra food that won’t fit in the pantry space, or the toy chest for the kids’ toys. You get the idea!
Small furniture is for small spaces.
This might seem like a no-brainer, but a lot of people who live in small spaces tend to overestimate the size of furniture that will fit without overpowering the space. Look specifically for smaller sized items, such as a compact sectional for the living room zone, and a small dining set for the dining area. If you are mindful of this when purchasing furniture for your small space, it really makes a big difference in the feel of your whole home.
