You’ve probably heard about the need to rotate your food storage, but that’s not the only home rotation you should perform on a regular basis. There are quite a few things around the house that will last longer and wear more evenly if you include them in a home rotation schedule. Here’s a list of the things you should include:
Rugs and carpet should be included in home rotation wherever possible. Rotation of a rug helps to ensure that it wears evenly. And as it wears more evenly, the overall life of your rug is extended. That equates to money savings, so it is definitely worth doing. It’s a good idea to rotate your rugs at least once each calendar year. In a high traffic area, you could do it as often as every 6 months if you prefer. Schedule it into the calendar on your phone, and you’ll never forget to get it done.
Any removable sofa, chair or bench cushions in your home need to be included in your home rotation. Just as with the rugs in your home, flipping and rotating your cushions helps them to last much longer and encourages even wear. Every six months is a good time to rotate your sofa cushions if you can. Some sofas and sectionals come with cushions that aren’t removable, so if you can’t remove your sofa cushions then you don’t have to worry about it. If you use sofa covers, you can rotate those, or alternate using them for six months and then removing them for six months. That will help extend the life of your sofa fabric.
Once upon a time, it was a good idea to rotate and flip your mattresses quarterly. However, the newer design of mattresses has mostly eliminated the need to flip them over. But it’s still helpful to rotate the mattress every 3-6 months. Home rotation of mattresses extend their life and encourages more even wear. It’s simple to do, so there’s no reason not to. All you have to do is lift the mattress and rotate the head of the mattress to the foot.
Other things you could consider including in your home rotation schedule are towels, throw pillows and blankets. For example, use the navy towels in your guest bathroom during fall and winter, then use the light gray during spring and summer. You get the idea!
