Is your home pretty much overflowing with clutter? Piles of papers here, stuffed closets there, and hidden surfaces everywhere? Then you need a good detox. Here is a foolproof plan to help you completely detox your home in one week, laid out day-by-day. All you have to do is commit to follow the plan, and at the end of seven days you’ll breathe a much-needed sigh of uncluttered relief!
Day One
To start off your home’s 7-day detox, you need to organize your closets. {In my opinion, this is getting the hardest part over with first!} Commit to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in a year, whether it’s because you don’t really like it or it doesn’t fit right. If the kids have grown out of it, donate it. Once you’ve gotten rid of the stuff you don’t need, organize your closet by grouping like items together.
Day Two
Now spend your time organizing all the books, magazines and toys in your home. Put the kids to work when it comes to helping with the toys. {This is easier if you first provide bins for them to sort their toys into}. Recycle magazines that you haven’t read or are more than two issues old. Donate old books you don’t want to read again. The books you keep can be organized alphabetically or by genre. For a fun twist, organize them by color.
Day Three
Today you get to focus on bedrooms. Make sure there’s nothing gathering dust bunnies underneath the beds, and clean up bedside tables and dresser tops. You should primarily store things on your nightstand that you need daily access to, such as the book you’re currently reading, a lamp, and an alarm clock. Stow everything else inside the drawer.
Day Four
Next up? The bathrooms! Do you have clutter strewn all over your countertops? Go through all the medicines and toss out what’s expired. Do the same with old cosmetics. Get baskets and bins to store like items together, and label them for easier access.
Day Five
Today is devoted to clearing out the kitchen clutter. For most of us, that means making it so we can actually see the kitchen counters! First, make sure your cabinets are clutter-free so that there’s room to store stuff taking up space on the counters. Just like in the bathroom, baskets and bins help organize and hold the essentials in your pantry and baking cabinet. And as always, toss tools and utensils that have seen better days, and donate what you don’t use. For more tips, see 10 Steps to an Orderly Kitchen at HGTV.
Day Six
Time to tackle the room in your house {like the attic} that is a haven for all the stuff you store. Broken furniture? Either get it fixed or toss it out. Group all holiday decorations together, and donate what you don’t use. Keep only the luggage pieces that you really use. Group camping stuff in one consolidated area.
Day Seven
You’ve made it to day seven, so it’s time to finish up with a bang by tackling the garage! Install shelving if you haven’t already, because it is a must for storing lots of items. Use pegboard to organize your tools. Large hooks are awesome for suspending bikes and other large items from the ceiling. As always, toss or donate unusable items.
Congratulations you made it through the process! Enjoy your clutter-free home!
