Microfiber is one of the most durable fabrics, so it’s a natural for furniture. Even though it’s durable and resists staining, stains can and do happen. If you find yourself needing to clean your microfiber furniture but are unsure how, this post is for you!
First, you should try to determine which type of microfiber you have. Somewhere on your furniture, there should be an information tag about its manufacture. There may or may not be a tag that looks like this:
If you see a code W on your furniture tag, it means you can clean it with water. An S stands for solvent, meaning a solvent-based cleaner. Some microfibers are one or the other, and some are both. If your tag only says it is made of polyester, use a solvent-based cleaner for best results. An X on your tag means you can only vacuum it. If your tag doesn’t have one of these codes, you can safely assume an S and go with a solvent-based cleaner.
So what type of cleaner is a solvent? Luckily, you can go with a simple bottle of rubbing alcohol, which is safe for polyester fabrics.
A clean and dry microfiber cloth is a good option for cleaning your microfiber furniture. Whether you are using alcohol or water, put it in a spray bottle for easy use. Spray the stained areas on your furniture, and use the cloth to blot up the stain, then rub in a circular motion to get up all the water or alcohol. You can also use a white or neutral colored sponge instead of a cloth. Note that the sponge should also be dry, not wet.
Keep wetting stained areas with the spray bottle and then scrubbing with the cloth or sponge, until all the stains have transferred to the sponge. Then let the furniture dry.
Once your microfiber furniture is dry, use a soft bristle brush to brush the fabric in a circular motion. This re-fluffs the fibers of the fabric and makes it feel soft and just like new once again.
