Clean gutters are an essential part of a well-maintained home. If they aren’t clean, especially during winter snows and spring rains, you’re just asking for trouble! It is highly recommended that rain gutters are cleaned twice each year–during the Fall and again before the spring rains. Here is an easy way to clean your grungy gutters, and get them working (and looking!) like new!
To do the job properly, you will need the following items:
a ladder
work gloves
a hand shovel
a long hose with sprayer attachment
Place the ladder at one end of your roof, making sure it is stable before climbing up. Use the hand shovel to scoop out large leaves and any other debris that you find in the gutters. Drop it on the ground below to rake up later. Be careful to just reach as far as you comfortably can without stretching too far. Move the ladder as you go, until you have gone around the whole perimeter of your roof. Once you have cleared the gutters of all leaves and large debris, it is time to flush them out using the hose and sprayer.
If you are comfortable doing so, and your roof isn’t too steep, it is easiest to flush the gutters while up on the roof. If not, it can be done from the ladder. Use the hose to flush any remaining dirt and small debris from the gutters–just be sure that you aim the flow of water toward a downspout at all times. {Check the downspouts first to make sure they are not clogged with debris}.
Once the gutters are flushed and clean, rake up and dispose of the leaves and debris that you dropped on the ground.
