Gravy is one of the best parts of those delicious holiday dinners–until it stains your clothes, table linens or carpet. But this year, you’ll be prepared to remove gravy stains from even your favorite white shirt! Here are some easy ways to say goodbye to those pesky gravy stains.
What To Do When Gravy Stains Happen
Let’s talk first things first, and that means you should never put off dealing with that spill until later if you can help it. When you have a gravy spill, the best luck at removing the stain comes from quickly scraping off any excess gravy so it doesn’t sit and soak further in the fabric or carpet surface. Just remember that with any stain, including gravy, the older it is the harder it is to get out.
For A Gravy Stain On Washer-Safe Fabrics
- After you scrape away any excess gravy on the stain, treat it with an aerosol pre-treater, such as Shout Advanced Stain Lifting Foam. An aerosol stain remover is generally better on greasy stains like gravy.
- Allow the stain remover to penetrate the fabric for just a minute.
- If desired, rub in a small amount of your regular detergent.
- Launder immediately as usual.
Gravy Stains On Carpet
- If you spill gravy on carpet, quickly scrape up the excess gravy until only the stain remains.
- Use a clean white cloth and isopropyl rubbing alcohol to blot the stain. Continue until the stain color no longer transfers from the carpet to the cloth.
- Mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid with warm water in a spray bottle.
- Again use a blotting motion to work the soap & water mixture into the carpet stain.
- Spray the stain with water only to rinse. A light amount is fine, don’t try to soak the carpet.
- Thoroughly blot up all moisture with a clean, absorbent towel. Allow the spot to air dry.
Gravy on Upholstered Furniture
- One way to get gravy stains out of your sofa or chair is with dry cleaning solvent.
- First, use baking soda sprinkled over the spot to absorb as much grease as possible.
- Vacuum the stain.
- Apply a dry cleaning solvent with a clean white cloth, according to manufacturer’s directions.
- Blot {don’t rub!} up the solvent. Repeat steps until the stain disappears.
Follow the above steps to quickly get gravy stains out of your way this holiday season {or any time!}.
