How To Clean Flat Irons
First of all, why should you keep your flat iron clean? According to celebrity stylist Daven Mayeda, that build-up will prevent the flat iron from heating evenly, and it also causes split ends and other damage to your hair. Sounds like plenty of good reason to me!
Mayeda says that the best way to clean your trusty flat iron is to follow these simple steps:
- Heat the iron to the very lowest setting, and then turn it off and unplug it from the outlet. Getting it warm helps to loosen the hard, baked-on gunk that builds up over time.
- While the iron is warm, but not hot enough to burn you, grab some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth or some cotton balls. Wet the cloth and/or cotton balls with the rubbing alcohol, and use it to rub away the dirt and build-up on the flat iron. Cotton swabs are helpful for cleaning the tiny areas around the ceramic plates.
- Repeat these steps as necessary until the iron is clean.
Once you have a clean, like new flat iron, keep it that way by cleaning it at least monthly. If you use a lot of styling products {especially hair spray!}, you may want to clean it weekly to keep it performing its best and to protect your hair from damage.
