Summer is the best! If you have a pool it’s even better–unless you and your friends are drowning in germs {yuck!}. Even though pool water is chlorinated, that doesn’t stop mold and mildew from growing inside your pool toys. Luckily, we have some great tips to clean pool accessories. Do it regularly, and you won’t have to worry about germs.
Why Clean Pool Accessories
The chlorine in the pool does help keep your pool and the accessories cleaner than they’d be without it, but it isn’t foolproof. Pool accessories that never dry out inside are very likely to start playing host to mold and mildew. And no one wants to play with that!
Tips To Clean Pool Accessories
It is a good idea to clean pool accessories at least once a month during the summer, or as long as your pool season lasts. Use a solution made with:
- one gallon of warm water
- a quarter cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid
A small plastic kiddie pool is a great place to clean pool accessories. Use a scrub brush or sponge, dip it into the warm, soapy water, and apply to the outside of the pool accessories. Be sure to clean all the outside surfaces well.
If you have any pool accessories that accumulate water on the inside, such as rubber ducks or other plastic toys, use a mixture of one gallon warm water and two cups bleach to sanitize the inside. Submerge the toys in this solution, and let them soak for a few minutes to kill any mold or mildew.
Thoroughly rinse and dry your pool accessories after cleaning before using them again.
Storing Pool Accessories
Once the pool accessories are clean, you can help them stay clean longer by storing them properly between uses. A dry spot that is protected from water and the elements is best. Pool accessories that dry between uses are less likely to get mold and mildew growing inside. Don’t forget to store your pool accessories and other summer toys safely to protect them during the winter.
