When it comes time to spring clean, you don’t have to get it all done in one day. Not only is that incredibly exhausting, but you’ll also probably get a third of the way through your cleaning and then just give up. Instead of taking on the monster of spring cleaning in one fell swoop, take it day by day and chore by chore. Here are some of the best spring cleaning schedules that will get your house looking great without wearing you out.
- The first place you should clean is up top. That means fans, ceiling corners, walls, and on top of shelves. If you don’t start up top, then when you do get to cleaning up there, all the dust and debris will settle on the ground, making you have to clean the floor all over again.
- Next, make sure to wash all the walls thoroughly. That means taking a damp rag and cleaning the whole thing. You’d be surprised at how many hardly noticeable stains can clump together to make your walls look old and dirty. So, wash them down and you’re house will look five years younger!
- Clean all doors, windows, mirrors, handles, and knobs. This is especially important if you have little kids, because they seem to get sticky, goopy messes all over the place. When cleaning windows, get both the inside and outside, since you want that spring sun to come in as strong and clear as possible!
- Take all your linens and fabrics like blankets, rugs, and pillows and dust them off outside. Make sure to do this away from any entrances to your home, or else that dust will just settle back inside. Beat the rugs and other objects so that they get thoroughly clean. You can spray them with deodorizer, too, if you want.
5. When cleaning the bedrooms, make sure to take special care of the mattress. There are products you can buy (or make) that you sprinkle on your bed, let it sit, and then vacuum off. This kills germs, freshens the mattress, and keeps it clean. Also, if necessary, you can flip the mattress.
6. I always like to include a closet cleanout in my spring cleaning schedule. So, if you find that you have way too many clothes, then give this a shot! Make three piles: keep, donate, throw out/recycle. Keep what you know you will wear, donate what you haven’t worn in a while, and upcycle or recycle the clothes with rips, holes, and stains.
7. You’ll also want to make sure to clean and replace any air filters and vents that you can reach. This is really helpful in making sure your air stays clean and that dust doesn’t settle back into your home right after you’ve cleaned. If needed, call a professional to clean harder-to-reach vent areas and pipes.
8. When you go to clean your kitchen, make sure the fridge is properly cared for. That means emptying out all the contents, throwing away anything that’s expired or hasn’t been used in a few months, and cleaning the entire inside. Also move the fridge away from the wall and clean the exterior, including the coils.
9. Take a few hours to get your linen closet in order this spring. That means getting rid of any unmatching, ripped, or stained linens as well as keeping all the bedding together. Have specific spots in your linen closet for towels, bedding, tablecloths, etc. A little organizing now can save you a world of messiness in the future.
10. The bathrooms are one of the places that need some of the most work, mainly because it’s a high traffic room and there are lots of potential hygiene issues. Make sure to wipe down all surfaces, including light switches and knobs. Also go through the medicine cabinet and makeup and get rid of any expired medication or makeup you don’t use anymore. You’d be surprised at how much space you can save!
