How to Keep the Toilet Area Free of Urine Stains & Smells

April 26, 2018 by 101 Days... Leave a Comment

The worst part about bathroom cleaning has got to be the toilet area, right? Particularly if you have boys in your home! It seems that they will invariably find ways to get urine anywhere but in the actual toilet. Let’s talk about some bathroom ideas–specifically how to keep the toilet area free of urine stains and smells. Because if we can achieve that, we can pretty much achieve anything. Read on for one of my favorite bathroom cleaning ideas!

  1. The best tip to keep urine splashes and stains to a minimum is really so simple people just forget to do it. Before you flush, close the toilet seat! So many germs can be sprayed around the whole area {as many as 10 feet away!} by flushing with the seat up. So for the health of everyone in the house {plus your sanity!} get everyone to start closing the seat before they flush.
  2. A lot of little boys have trouble at night when they can’t see very well to aim for the bowl. You can take care of this problem by painting the underside of the seat and the bowl rim with glow in the dark paint. Might seem silly, but it’s a pretty viable solution if you’re a mom of little boys!
  3. We all know that boys tend to get urine in some tough spots, so it’s a really good idea to remove the toilet seat at least once a month when bathroom cleaning so you can clean that area thoroughly. It might take you an extra few minutes, but it is worth doing to get rid of the stains & smells that happen there.
  4. To make a bathroom cleaning foam that really works wonders to get the toilet bowl clean, use a mixture of borax and castile soap. Just put some of each in the toilet bowl. Use the toilet brush to mix it until foamy and then work it into the stains. Pay close attention to the areas around the siphons and under the rim.
  5. You can seriously cut the urine smells and keep the toilet bowl cleaner by making some DIY toilet cleaning bombs (visit this link for my recipe!). Mix citric acid with baking soda plus lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils. Drop one of these babies in the toilet bowl and let it dissolve. They smell amazing!
