What Is Swedish Death Cleaning

That word “death” is what tends to throw people off when they first hear of Swedish death cleaning. Swedish death cleaning is actually a thoughtful thing to do. It is also a way to organize permanently so that your life is always less cluttered.

The main idea behind Swedish death cleaning is that by the end of middle age, or even sooner, it’s just considerate to go through your stuff and get rid of the clutter–so loved ones don’t have to do it for you when you’re gone. If you’ve ever had to clean out the home of your parents or grandparents, you know this is a valuable practice!

How To Start

The main ways to get rid of the clutter include giving it away to friends and loved ones or donating it to charity. But what do you get rid of? There are some steps anyone can follow once you determine it’s time to downsize your stuff. These 9 Decluttering Rules to Live By will help.

Begin With The Large Stuff

It’s easier to start with large items–furniture pieces you don’t need, accessories cluttering up the living room, small kitchen appliances you don’t use. Worry about papers and photos last.

Do It Regularly

As part of your regular tidying up, set a time to declutter. Carry a bag around, and anything you’re getting rid of goes into the bag. Decide where the bag will go–a donation bin or the trash bin.

That means tell your loved ones you’ve got stuff you’re giving away, and let them come and pick out what they’d like. Once everyone has had a chance, you can consider it safe to dispose of unclaimed items.

Gift Things {Thoughtfully}

Do you have specific items with sentimental or family value? Think about who has the space in their heart and home to take those things and gift them accordingly. The hardest part is letting them go.

A Note About Photos

If you have a lot of old photos, toss the ones with people you do not recognize. Digitize the rest and preserve them on a thumb drive. Literally thousands of old pictures and slides will fit on one little thumb drive–freeing up a ton of space in your storage room.

Swedish death cleaning frees up your space and your mind. And your loved ones will thank you.
