Dusting Hacks
- Get and run an air purifier. Air purifiers with true HEPA filters can remove up to 99% of the dust, pollen, smoke and pet dander from rooms in your home. They can also remove bacteria and viruses, so they’re definitely worth using, especially during cold and flu season!
- Use a humidifier. Dust prefers drier air, because it’s easier to go airborne. The more humid the air, the harder it is for it to travel. Humidifiers have other benefits too, such as decreased allergies and dry skin that seem to go hand-in-hand with drier air.
- Change your furnace filter more often. It’s recommended to change your filter about every 3 months. But to decrease the level of dust {and allergens} in your home, try changing the filter monthly. You’ll be amazed at how much less accumulates on the surfaces in your home with this simple change.
- Check your shoes at the door. It’s really quite amazing that most of the dust that enters your home enters via the bottoms of people’s shoes. So if you leave your shoes at the door, you automatically decrease the presence of it around the house.
- Vacuum frequently, and use a HEPA filter in your vacuum. At least once a week, vacuum the entire house. High-traffic areas benefit from vacuuming 2-3 times per week.
- Change and wash your bedding weekly. Dead skin cells that slough off our bodies nightly contribute to dust and dust mites. When you change your bedding, vacuum your mattress too.
Along with these 6 cleaning tips, make sure to use welcome mats outside your doors, and use them to remove most of the dirt and dusty stuff from your shoes before you even walk inside.
