Front-loading washing machines definitely have their pros and cons. One of the biggest cons about owning a front-load washer is the extra cleaning it requires to prevent and remove mold. Because of the door’s design, mold and mildew grow quickly in the rubber gasket. If you don’t stay on top of the moisture that accumulates in the gasket, you will have a smelly problem on your hands. Here is how to remove mold from washing machine doors.

One of the easiest ways to remove mold in your washing machine is probably in your pantry right now.  Put a cup of vinegar in your wash, either in an empty load or with your towels. The vinegar helps to break down odor-causing mold and mildew throughout the machine. To stay on top of mold, mildew and other residues inside your machine, use bleach in your whites at least once per month.

To remove mold from the door and gasket, use a wet, soapy rag to thoroughly clean the rubber gasket. Be sure to wipe all around and underneath the gasket and all it’s surfaces. It’s a good idea to even do this weekly to prevent mold. Just include it as part of your regular cleaning chores.

Leave the machine’s door open a crack between uses to allow the inside to dry out. This step alone will prevent a lot of future mold growth!

Be careful not to leave wet loads sitting inside the washing machine for prolonged periods of time. As soon as a load is finished, remove it to the dryer. If you’ve ever smelled that musty odor of a forgotten wet load, you know this is important!

Finally, be sure to use a High Efficiency {HE} rated detergent inside a front-loading washing machine. It is specifically low-sudsing to prevent the deposits that encourage mold growth from building up in your machine.
